Polymers in an ionic liquid medium
Leaders: Alain Fradet and Joan Vignolle
CThis second topic shall focus on ionic liquids as a medium for polymerisation and the chemical modification of polymers. A precise understanding of the IL/monomer and/or IL/polymer interactions becomes critically important for clearly identifying the role of the IL in the effectiveness of the mode of polymerisation or chemical functionalisation of the polymer. How does the nature of the cation and anion influence the viscosity of the medium, the solubility of the polymer and the speed of reaction? Polymerist chemists will be interested in the design of ILs for specific tasks (e.g. catalytic applications or chirality) and of polymerisable reactive ILs. The knowledge and competences of the ionic liquids community shall be particularly appreciated by polymerists as it will help them choose the most appropriate IL for the polymerisation mode or functionalisation of the polymer.
The scientific subjects covered in this second topic shall concern:
- ILs used as new polymerisation media
- The effectiveness of ILs in polymerisation processes
- Chemical modifications of polymers in ILs
- Design of polymerisable reactive ILs
- Stabilisation of polymer nanoparticles by ILs
- Catalysis of polymerisation by ILs
